​Here at Bamboo Grove nursery we grow a selection of the world's most beautiful bamboo plants that are suitable for Melbourne's diverse weather conditions. Although Australia is host to a vast range of bamboo not all species are suitable for Victoria.

From the popular screening Slender Weavers to the shade loving Nepalese Blue and exotic palm like Ghost, we have a large selection of non-invasive (clumping) bamboo plants from which to choose, that can be found on Screening prices page 1 and page 2. We also grow Black, Golden and Red Cane (running) bamboo which are best grown in pots, these can be found on our Ornamental prices page.


As growers, we subject our bamboo plants to real world conditions - cold frosty nights of winter, the scorching heat of summer and the prevailing winds of all seasons. They have not come straight from a protected poly house or warmer climate, so therefore will have no trouble adjusting to your growing conditions. This is one of the most edible species in the world, particularly in Taiwanese cuisine. From eating new shoots to steaming rice and fish in the foliage and culms. It's poles are also good for light construction. A tropical wonder which is fast growing, lush and hardy.

This outstanding bamboo has been growing successfully here at Bamboo Grove for a number of years, with its blueish white culms and erect form it makes a beautiful feature bamboo contrasting well in any landscape.

* Pot sizes: plants are photographed in front of a measuring culm 1.8mtrs in height, with black tie intervals every 500mm, and reflect the average dimensions for the particular price. There are some variants between plants.

When exposed to full sunlight the new shoots are pink to red in colour, with maturity they turn to a yellow gold with irregular green stripes between the nodes. Alphonse Karr makes an excellent container plant and can even be grown indoors in a well lit room for short periods. In its natural environment it makes a good screen or hedge and a nice stand alone landscape specimen.

Gold stripe makes a good shorter growing screening option with a nice compact but upright growing habit. It has attractive dark green foliage with a gold stripe on the lower part of the culms, also easily grown as a potted plant.
