Parliament Gardens also contains a memorial for two of the most prominent indigenous leaders of Australia; Pastor Sir Douglas and Lady Gladys. The memorial also includes an artwork by Ngarra Murray.

Free environmental and sustainability education programs for children and community groups of all kinds, including pre-schoolers, primary and secondary students, scouts, guides and walking groups are offered by the City of Whitehorse. A visit to Yarran Dheran Nature Reserve can be tailored to suit groups of most kinds!

This service is coordinated by Council’s Education Program Officer, and is supported by experienced volunteers

Yarran Dheran Nature Reserve is a reserve situated on the southern bank of the Mullum Mullum Creek in the north eastern corner of the City of Whitehorse. It is a mixture of original indigenous bushland and reconstructed bushland on a previously industrial site and covers 7.2 hectares.

The Mullum Mullum Creek runs through the Reserve from its beginnings in Croydon before joining the Yarra River at Templestowe, providing an important corridor for wildlife. Over 85 species of birds have been identified in the Reserve. Koalas were released into the area in the 1970’s and may still be occasionally seen in the manna gums. Kangaroos and wallabies are also seen as they move up and down the Mullum Mullum Valley. An active sightings program is conducted by the Yarran Dheran Nature Reserve Advisory Committee.

The Reserve has a large network of paths which take the visitor through different vegetation types and several picnic areas are provided.

Park your car on top of an old volcano and take a walk into the river valley to the awesome stone columns that give this park its name. The Organ Pipes hang on a cliff face over picturesque Jackson Creek. Bring a picnic and enjoy the serenity.

The Organ Pipes National Park is located at the eastern-most edge of one of the world’s largest ancient volcanic lava flows, stretching 350 kilometres from the edge of Melbourne to the western border of Victoria.

Please note, the initial walk from the carpark is down a short but very steep hill. Whilst the bitumen path is smooth it is steep and may not be suitable for some people (see the image on Walk and Picnic at Organ Pipes National Park to get a better idea). This is the only way to access the park and leads to the iconic Organ Pipes, Rosette Rock which resembles the spokes of a giant wheel, and the Tessellated Pavement which is a mosaic-like basalt outcrop.

Towering above charming Jacksons Creek, the impressive basalt columns that resemble organ pipes were formed about a million years ago when huge quantities of molten lava were ejected from volcanoes near what is now Sunbury and flowed over the Keilor Plains. These plains are fairly flat except where streams such as Jacksons Creek have cut deep valleys over the years.
