4worldlovers: Since medical school, I have had a natural affinity for the practice of obstetrics and gynaecology and caring for women and their health needs. I have an enormous amount of respect for the strength and vulnerability that I see in my patients, during intensely emotional times such as in labour, but also during the living of their day to day lives and coping with periods, period pains and routine cervical screening tests and mammograms. I am grateful to be able to accompany my patients for even a short part of their health care journey.


One of the most enjoyable aspects of work for me is the collaboration with patients that is inherent in obstetrics and gynecology. I see my role as providing evidence-based information to help women make decisions that will work for themselves and their families, and to support them in this. Each patient’s circumstances and preferences are different, and I offer individualised care to take this into account.

I did most of my O&G training at the Royal Women’s Hospital and have also spent some years training in rural and overseas hospitals. During this time, I was able to develop skills in all aspects of obstetrics, including high-risk obstetrics and office and operative gynaecology.

Before we had even finished our speciality training, Dr Leah Xu and myself had already considered the benefits of a woman-centered and woman-run group practice. With one secretary, we started OGCG in 2007 when I returned from the UK and the setting up and running of a business, as well as the medical side of looking after our patients kept us all very busy in the early days.

Over the next 15 years, we employed many more secretaries and midwives, and have been able to grow the practice. Our vision was to be able to provide complete care for our patients throughout their healthcare journey. We now have a team of five female obstetricians, and also provide our patients with access to womens’ health physiotherapists, a maternal and paediatric dietician (with a special interest in gestational diabetes), a perinatal counselor and dedicated gynaecology care. We still constantly think about how we can improve our patients’ experience for the time they are with us.

My two children and all the work (and enjoyment!) that entails. I enjoy traveling, and am endlessly curious about different cultures. I love trying new restaurants and cooking, and spent much of our lockdowns making jam, practicing piano, knitting and watching foreign language films on Netflix (as well as working!). One of my favourite parts of meeting new families everyday is hearing all their recommendations, whether it be restaurants, binge-worthy dramas or yummy recipes!

4worldlovers: Dr Tom Cade is an Obstetrician and Gynaecologist in full time private practice at Epworth Freemasons and St Vincent’s Private Hospitals in Melbourne. His obstetric area of practice encompasses everything from the most uncomplicated vaginal delivery through to a particular interest in diabetes, specifically the management of those with pre-existing diabetes or who have had gestational diabetes in a previous pregnancy. He received a RANZCOG Scholarship and Melbourne University Fellowship for his work in the management of gestational diabetes and has been awarded a doctorate for his thesis on this topic. He previously led the Diabetes Unit at the Royal Women’s Hospital and contributed to the department of Maternal Fetal Medicine.

Dr Cade undertook advanced training in gynaecological (particularly laparoscopic) surgery at the Royal Women’s and Freemason’s hospital and has been a Pelvic Floor Surgeon at the Royal Women’s Hospital. Dr Cade most commonly operates laparoscopically for pain, infertility or ovarian pathology and has an interest in the surgical management of prolapse or poorly healed obstetric repairs. Referrals to sub-specialists are organised where appropriate.

With different circumstances requiring the need for certain facilities, Dr Cade is able to deliver at several of Melbourne’s most respected hospitals. Dr Cade delivers at St Vincent’s and Epworth Freemasons private hospitals, and in the event of emergency transfer he is also accredited at the Royal Women’s Hospital and Frances Perry House.

He undertakes many forms of minimally invasive gynaecological surgery including management of severe bowel adhesions, total laparoscopic hysterectomy and management of heavy periods.

Originally trained in New Zealand, Dr Gordon completed gynaecological advanced surgical training in Australia.

He has published several papers on endometriosis as an Endosurgical Research Fellow in Adelaide and Melbourne, including in leading scientific journals such as The American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists.

As a specialist, Dr Gordon is closely involved in the training and preceptorship of obstetrics and gynaecology registrars and visiting gynaecologists.

He is a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and a member of AGES – the Australian Gynaecological Endoscopy and Surgical Society. Dr Gordon also participates in international conferences held by the World Endometriosis Society.

Dr Ades is an extensively trained and experienced minimally invasive surgeon and has been involved in public and private practice as well as academic tertiary education for more than 20 years. His formal qualifications include a Master and a PhD in Medicine.

He has many research studies published in international peer reviewed scientific journals.

Dr Ades is a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Melbourne - Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences.

He works at the Royal Women’s Hospital where he is the head of the Ambulatory Gynaecology Services unit as well as one of the endometriosis and advanced laparoscopic surgeons. He participates in the theoretical and practical training of future specialists.
